About triathlon

Triathlon is a unique and compelling sport, consisting of an explosive 1.5km swim, followed by a punishing 40km bike ride and finally a gruelling 10km run to the finishing line. Multiple laps and three times the excitement make it the ultimate spectator sport and a breathtaking, awe-inspiring event.

The sport is one of the fastest growing in the world with more and more people taking up the challenge of competing in an event that combines the very best of three exciting disciplines. Triathlon made its Olympic debut at Sydney in 2000 and this boosted its popularity with specatators and potential athletes even further.

Salford's relationship with triathlon began in 2000 with the Millenium Waterfronts Triathlon which attracted over 500 competitors and proved a huge success. This led to the National Triathlon Championships in 2001, swiftly followed by the 2002 Commonwealth Games, which attracted 100,000 spectators to the now famous Quays course. With these triple triumphs under Salford's belt, it was no surprise when the ITU granted the UK's only World Cup event to the city in 2003. Salford has now hosted World Cup events every year since and is proud to take its place on the international circuit algonside cities such as Honolulu, Beijing, Cancun and Madrid.
